Landscaping Design Considerations

Mitchell Ray

Before you hire a landscaping contractor to revamp your backyard, you need to create a landscaping design for the space. The design doesn't have to be extremely detailed, but you do need to have a general idea of how your yard should look. This way, it's easier for you to relay your vision to the landscaper. To create a design for your backyard that fits all of your family's needs, take these things into consideration.

Define the Space

You can't create a functional landscaping design if you don't know how you want to use your backyard. The last thing you want to do is plant flowers in a place that you later realize would have been ideal for your patio. Remember, your backyard may serve several different purposes. So, take some time to think about whether you need any of these features:

  • Grassy spot for children or pets to enjoy.
  • Swimming pool or hot tub.
  • Entertainment area.
  • Storage shed for extra storage and/or gardening supplies.
  • Built-in barbecue.
  • Deck or patio.
  • Flower gardens.
  • Herb and/or vegetable gardens.

Maintenance Level

Before you design a backyard space that's filled with beautiful gardens, you need to consider how much work you're willing to do on a regular basis to maintain your yard. If you enjoy doing yard work and like to garden, creating an extravagant landscaping design that's filled with vegetable gardens, gravel paths, and flower beds filled with bright-colored blooms may be ideal for you. However, if you don't enjoy doing yard work or you already maintain a relatively busy life, you should consider creating a landscaping design that's low maintenance. Here are some ways to do this:

  • Limit the amount of grass in your backyard so that you aren't spending a lot of time mowing.
  • Plant bushes in your flower beds instead of flowers, because they don't require a lot of maintenance.
  • Plant lavender to add color to your landscaping design. Lavender is a plant that will continue to grow year after year, and you only need to water it a couple of times per week.

The fact is, it's your backyard. You need to create a space that fits your family's needs. While there are a lot of things that you need to consider before creating a landscaping design, it isn't difficult to do. Once you have a few ideas in mind, you can start discussing them with your landscapers. Before you know it, you'll have the yard of your dreams.
