Installing A New Patio? Tips For Choosing The Best Construction Material And Patio Furniture

Mitchell Ray

If you and your family are planning to spend more time in the backyard this summer, you should consider installing a new patio. Depending on the size, you may even be able to do it yourself. Below are some tips on choosing the type of construction material for your patio, as well as patio furniture material that will hold up well to the outside elements.

Construction Material

Patios can be much more than a concrete slab. Two options you have is to construct the patio are with flagstone or pavers.

Flagstone works great as an outdoor material. It is popular for patios because flagstone has narrow packed joints so water will permeate the surface instead of running off it. Flagstone is also slip-resistant, which is especially helpful if you have children. You will find flagstone in earthy shades of blues, grays, reds, and browns. Common types of flagstone that are used for patios are limestone, slate, and sandstone.

Pavers may be a little more expensive, but in the long run you will save money. This is because you will never have to worry about sealing or staining it continually. Repairs are also much easier as you can repair one paver at a time. Pavers are made of stone, brick, or concrete, and come in a variety of styles, shapes, and colors. One reason why people like pavers is they can be very creative with them. This is because you lay one paver at a times so you can create any pattern you like.

Patio Furniture Material

Once you have the patio installed, you now need to choose the patio furniture. Besides making sure the furniture is comfortable, you have to make sure the furniture can hold up well to the elements.

Furniture made of synthetic resin wicker is stylish, durable, lightweight, and low maintenance. It also holds up well to outside weather.  When choosing this furniture, make sure it is made with high density polyethylene (HDPE) wicker instead of cheap PVC wicker. Cheap PVC will crack and become brittle over time, but the HDPE materials are higher grade, so you will not have this problem.

If you want wood patio furniture, teak wood is a good option. It can hold up great to the weather and has a beautiful grain finish. Teak is unique as it produces its own oil. It is a hardwood, which makes it durable. You won't have to worry about getting any dents or dings in the wood.

Cast aluminum is another option, and is a good material because it is durable and lightweight. This furniture is not a good choice, however, if you live in an area that experiences high winds often. If you live in an area like this and still want aluminum, there are some things you can do to keep the furniture from blowing away.

You should now be on your way to creating a patio you can be proud of. For more information, contact a company like K & R Lawn and Landscaping.
